Press offices vandalized, state media under threat yet again

ITANAGAR, May 8: In a shocking incident, the offices of Press Trust of India in Itanagar and Arunachal Front, in Naharlagun were vandalized today by a group of youths.

Computers, inverters, telephones and other office infrastructure were completely damaged in both the offices.

The damage was so massive that the daily has been forced to shut its office.

Not satisfied yet with their condemnable action, the perpetrators went looking for the Editor of Arunachal Front Pradip Kumar at his residence while he was out in meeting.

The attacks were carried out by youths unhappy at non publication of a news item by the dailies in the state.

The incident happened today in the afternoon forcing the City Police to tighten security at all media houses based in the Capital town.

In the light of the earlier attacks on media persons, these incidents only reiterate that despite all assurances of the government the media in the state is still hunted down for various interests and freedom of the press remains just a slogan.

Previous experiences have shown that as long as the media toes the line on any issue, it is applauded. But when it raises concerns about issues in the state and takes a stand, it is made a scapegoat and vandalized. The justification of such an approach can hardly be conducive to free speech and a free press guaranteed by the constitution.

ANSU concerned at lack of development

ITANAGAR, May 8: The All Nyishi Students’ Union (ANSU) has urged the 14 legislators of the community, particularly seven from the ruling party to ensure proper coordination among them for bringing development of all the Nyishi dominated areas in the state.

ANSU president Sikka Gapak and general secretary Arjun Panye while lamenting over the present education scenario in the Nyishi belt, put the blame on the community legislators for not showing adequate attention towards development.

The ANSU leaders further said the infrastructure development of all the Nyishi dominated areas depends on proper road communication and therefore urged for paying proper attention towards this end immediately.

Stating that ANSU is committed towards development of the community, the leaders felt that the union will always stand for the interests of the people, adding, that it would always stay in the forefront to question the government on issues related to the community’s development.

Lamenting on the poor literacy rate of the state, particularly in Kurung Kumey district as reflected in 2011 census report, Gapak said the Union would take all possible steps and sought everybody’s cooperation to eradicate illiteracy, particularly in the Nyishi belt. ANSU general secretary Arjun Panye resented against poor road communication in the Nyishi belt which has been preventing their development and asked all Nyishi legislators to take up projects to redress the grievances.

Organisations questions media report

ITANAGAR, May 8:  A news report that appeared in Times of India (ToI) web portal on May 4 last, written by one Pradeep Thakur, has created a furor amongst the members of Nyishi community of the state.

The report, which talks about the ‘race to the chief minister’s post after the death of Dorjee Khandu’, mentions the Nyishi tribe in poor light.

In his assessment of the situation Thakur while mentioning PWD Minister Nabam Tuki as one of the contenders for the coveted post cites that ‘he (Tuki) belongs to Nishyi tribe which does not enjoy good rapport amongst other tribes’.

Lambasting the report and the writer, the All Nyishi Students Union (ANSU) condemned it as it showed the community in very poor light.

Talking to media persons here on Saturday, ANSU President Sikka Gapak said that such news report based on hearsay and mere speculation of the writer is against the ethics of journalism and fair reporting. The crime committed is more serious as it damages the reputation and image of a particular community, he said.

Taking serious exception to the report, ANSU has declared three black days in protest against the report and the writer.

“This is a message to the writer in particular and the media fraternity in general to avoid dragging a community into bad light on personal and vested speculations. This is also a demand for the writer and the media house responsible for the publication to clarify and seek apology,” Gapak added.

He demanded immediate clarification by the daily prominently with an unconditional apology. The Union questioned how could one of the largest circulated daily of the country behave so irresponsibly in total violation of journalistic ethics and guidelines of the Press Council of India?

“This is highly condemnable as it has hurt the sentiments of the largest community of the state which has been contributing for all round development of the state in all respects,” it said.

The Union observed that it is not concerned with who becomes the CM, which is decided by the ruling party and legislators, but seriously viewed the ‘intention’ of dragging the community’s name in the entire gamut that too in bad light.

On the other hand, ANSU has also asked the Government of Arunachal to clarify its stand on the issue within 7 days or else it would presume it to be anti-Nyishi.

“We have 14 Nyishi legislators of whom 7 belong to the ruling party but no one represents the united sentiment of the community. Unfortunately all are divided on personal counts,” the Union added. The All Papum Pare District Students’ Union (APPDSU), in a statement has also flayed the news report that came out in the ToI portal throwing a ‘bad light’ on the Nyishi community of the state.

Asserting that the said report has ‘hurt the sentiments of the community’, the Union sought clarification from the writer on what basis it was mentioned that the ‘Nyishi tribe does not enjoy good rapport amongst other tribes’.

It went on to clarify that Nyishis have been the most generous tribes of the state which can be vouched by the fact that in spite of the state capital being a Nyishi dominated area people of all tribes permanently reside here in peace. Members of other tribes successfully residing and flourishing in the state capital outnumber the original inhabitants it claimed and reiterated that this proves the ‘good rapport’ enjoyed by the community amongst other tribes.

Demanding the ‘writer’ to come clean on the issue the Union also appealed political leaders of the state not to drag in the name of tribes for political games. Meanwhile, it urged the elders and umbrella organizations of the community to take up the matter with the concerned media house.

Meanwhile, the journalists in the state has expressed deep concern over the report that appeared in web version of the ToI.

Arunachal Press Club  mailed a complain letter to ToI on Friday. Another letter was mailed today registering stern objection signed by presidents of APC and Arunachal Pradesh Union of Working Journalists (APUWJ).

Carry forward the legacy: AAPSU

ITANAGAR, May 8: The All Arunachal Pradesh Students Union(AAPSU) today congratulated newly appointed chief minister Jarbom Gamlin.

AAPSU president Takam Tatung, in a press statement, expressed the hope that while Gamlin, a former AAPSU president, would fulfil all demands of the Union on priority, he would continue the legacy of former chief minister Dorjee Khandu in accelerating the pace of development in the state.

Tatung said AAPSU’s charter of demands included a permanent solution to the contentious Chakma-Hajong and Tibetan refugee imbroglio and overhauling the education sector, among others.

“We hope the chief minister would also withdraw all the pending cases against the AAPSU activists who have been victimised while working for the greater cause of state and its people”.

Expressing deep concern over the tragic death of Khandu in a chopper crash on April 30 last, which coincides with the alleged NSCN(K) ultimatum to legislators of Tirap and Changlang to withdraw their support from Khandu’s ministry, Tatung said this issue should be dealt with tactfully during the investigation to Khandu’s death.

Orgs demand registration of FIR

ITANAGAR, May 8: After a joint meeting Forum for Siang Dialogue (FSD) and Aane Siang RTI Forum (ASRTIF) has condemn the act of Pasighat police authorities for not registering case against the Deputy Director of School Education (DDSE) for discrepancies in the midday meal scheme in East Siang district as obtained through RTI and demand for immediate case register.

Both the union has warned anymore delay in the case would not be tolerated & will be compelled to launch democratic means for want of justice.

The case was filed by Forum for Siang Dialogue (FSD) on 06/04/2010 at Pasighat police station.

The joint meeting further call upon the Superintendent of police, East Siang to immediately hand over the Ruksin PS.case.no.04/11/us/409468/471/341.p.c R/W section 13(c) of p.c act lodged against B.D.O (C.D) Block, Ruksin by Aane Siang RTI Forum (ASRTIF) to SIC and the culprit be immediately booked. The delay in handing over the case by the authorities is giving ample time to cover up the misdeeds.

It has been observed that the work for flood protection in Ngorlung, Sika-Tode and Billat are now being carried out at war footing pace. This act of the Block Development Officer (BDO) is nothing but a desperate work to cover up the whole mismanagement and fund embezzlement without carrying out any physical work earlier. However the ASRTIF has documentary proof which has been already handed over to the authorities.

They are taking their jobs for granted

Dear Editor,

Myself, a well-wisher for the people of Arunachal Pradesh and a concerned citizen of India demand the government should recheck all educational certificates, licenses of pilots & engineers working at Pawan Hans. I think they are taking their job for granted. The helicopters in their fleet are very old. Pawan Hans should dump their old helicopters & replace them with new ones for the safety of the passengers. If they do not have the money to buy, better they stop their services & just go to hell.

The shameless officials are still sitting dumb after two crashes at Tawang.

These irresponsible people should be taken to task so that these kinds of events are not repeated in the future.

Yours,

Pratyush K Sarmah

We will like to see Govt. stability

Dear Editor,

The state has deeply mourned the death of its CM. now the question arises in the mind of everyone, whether the new CM will follow the ideology of the former CM, to complete the unfurnished task and the dream he saw of Arunachal in the years to come.

We all would like to see stability in the govt.

Some fears of dirty game of politics may come up short-while from now.

I along with all the citizen would like to request all the elected leaders to cooperate whosoever is heading the govt. in this time of crises to lead and monitor the unfurnished work of former CM in their respective constituencies, rather than thinking of playing dirty game of buying and selling. Ultimately the common citizens are the sufferer of the whole outcome.

Yours,

Tangam

We need justice

Dear Editor,

Our CM is dead, and the place where they located him and the others on the chopper didn't even fall close to the places ISRO detected. They were found by the locals who worked day and night to locate. We need answers and we Need Justice! They played with the sentiments of the people. And Why is the Governor not explaining the call? He was the one who told National TV our CM was fine and the chopper has been traced. And for Heaven's sake, there is no place called Taporchi at Bhutan. The Governor is an Ex Chief of Army Staff, He should know the Geography far better than anyone. There is no smoke without fire.  Please explain the call and the identity of the Caller. And how come ISRO detected all the wrong places? Why wasn't the area around Sela given special attention right from day one? Why was the centre silent all this while? Wasn't our CM from the same ruling Congress??A little word of assurance wouldn't have cost anything.  But maybe these days that's a little too much to ask for. Give us answers India. Tell us the details of the Black Box. Please give us answers.

We are appalled by the lack of attention of the National media. The whole of Arunachal Pradesh is complaining. Our CM's funeral is pushed to a tiny section of page 12 in a leading daily. Such attitude, we deserved better. Obama and Osama are far way important than the death of the head of a state perhaps.

Yours,

Tsering Pentsom

Not an encouraging one

Dear Editor,

Every daily news papers carried the death of our CM as their front-page headlines. As an Arunachalee we wanted to know about the incidents. The day was 5th May, Thursday, so as usual, before leaving my room for the college, I picked up 'Deccan Chronicle’ to know more. Then I came across a headline ''Dorjee: a grass root activist who rose to become CM''. Under this headline I came to know about the life of our CM and what he has done for us. It was really inspirational. He really deserves to be remembered as a great leader.

But what made me to write this letter is the next headline of the paper ''Hectic lobbying for new Arunachal CM''. Under this came across few names of politician who would be our CM. Those mentioned were Tako Dabi, Jarbom Gamlin and Nabum Tuki.

The lines that caught my eyes were 'Nabum has been seen as a rival of the late khandu, who kept him away by giving portfolios' and the other line was ' Nabam belongs to Nyishi tribe, which does not enjoy good support from other tribe.

The first line was a political concept so I have zero knowledge about it. But the second line has really made us think.

We are expecting media’s role to be important in uniting the peoples but the line mentioned was not an encouraging one.

Let the pilots decide

Dear Editor,

The tragic death of Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister, Dorjee Khandu, and four others in the crash of a single-engined Pawan Hans helicopter while flying from Tawang to Itanagar was shocking. On September 2, 2009, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy died in a similar accident.

As a parliamentary standing committee on transport, tourism and culture chaired by Sitaram Yechury points out in its latest reports, VVIPs are known to force pilots to operate in adverse weather conditions, when visibility is poor and the terrain inhospitable.

Political leaders should take the advice of pilots on weather conditions in the right spirit.

Give a thought to what is happening in your own backyard

Dear Editor,

In real sense this state is the sentinel of India and performs the duty of guard for the nation even though it is totally neglected state in all spheres.

The negligence of Central government is proved in locating the wreckage of Chopper carrying CM of Arunachal Pradesh and delayed search operation.

This treatment from the centre enraged the sentiments of the people of Arunachal Pradesh.

The operation carried out by the IAF aircraft and the ISRO could not locate the place where the chopper crashed.

It clearly denotes that India is far behind- not to compare with the developed countries like USA, England etc but from those of under developed countries like Bangladesh, Bhutan, etc in the field of modern scientific technology.

We being aggrieved Arunachalee feel ashamed of such big comments from the national leaders against Pakistan after USA killed Osama Bin Laden. Obama, the President of USA along with his cabinets were witnessing the live activities of the Operation thousands of Kilometers away: an absolute & Commendable Scientific Technology.

Before release of such big comments our national leaders should first talk of development of India in latest scientific Technology and security of own home country.

If Arunachal Pradesh is really one of the states of Union of India, the central government could develop military bases with sufficient infrastructure in the Indo-China Border.

Think of a cricketer earning lakhs of money from the Central government as gift- think of a soldier foot-marching several days without water in desert and without fire in snowy and icy mountains of Indian border: those struggling to defend foreign attacks- sacrificing all the luxuries of their life for the nation.

On the other hand, we still believe Khandu might have been alive for some hours after the crash and we could have done something.

Search operation with advanced scientific satellite technology could have located and saved his life.

Due to negligence of Central Government knowingly or unknowingly Khanduji is not with us today and Arunachalees are mourning in silence.

Yours,

Gekong Pertin

Who made that call?

Dear Editor,

I want to draw a few lines related to the Luguthang chopper crash in which our beloved  CM Dorjee Khandu & four others members lost their lives. While we went through ups and down regarding the crash, many big questions seem to be arises.

Who has made the phone call regarding safe landing of the chopper? Why govt. did stopped its search operation instead of sending recovery team immediately at landing place. If this was a fake call why Govt have not traced out the fake caller till now?

Yours,

K.Ori
